HEMLOCK, MI– High school students from Bay, Gratiot, Midland and Saginaw can now apply for this year’s round of scholarships from Hemlock Semiconductor to attend Michigan Technological University’s Engineering Scholars Summer Youth Program.
According to a release from Hemlock Semiconductor Operations, the scholarship offer is in its 13th year and will provide up to 30 full scholarships for students interested in attending the summer engineering program from July 23-28.
To those approved, the $1,275 scholarship will cover tuition, classroom supplies, housing, meals and round-trip charter bus transportation to Michigan Tech’s campus in the Upper Peninsula.
Applications will be accepted from students grades 9-11 until 5 p.m., Sunday, April 9.
The release shared that the program will offer students a full-immersion experience over a week-long exploration of mechanical, electrical, computer, biomedical, environmental and other types of engineering.
Participants will also hear from guest speakers and work together through hands-on project work like constructing a building strong enough to withstand an earthquake and creating an artificial intelligence “army.”
HSC Senior Vice President of Manufacturing Andy Ault said that the summer youth program is a chance to advance education, the local economy, and the workforce.
“Michigan Tech’s Engineering Scholars program is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn and explore their interests in STEM,” said Ault. “Hemlock Semiconductor is proud to offer these scholarships to students across the Great Lakes Bay Region because engineers play a critical role in our company’s mission to create a more sustainable world through silicon technology.”
The programs have been ongoing since 1972 to help deliver high-impact educational explorations for middle and high school students through a college experience involving on-campus housing and meeting others with similar interests.
HSC has been aiding local student participation in Michigan Tech’s summer programs since 2010, awarding nearly 200 scholarships.
According to HSC, over half of the students who attend the program continue to study engineering or computer science in college.
